How to do a full SEO Audit

The basic steps of an SEO Audit

Initial assessment

It starts with an accurate study of the customer, passing through a careful analysis of the optimization status of SEO ranking factors.

The initial assessment is done with the help of tools such as Google Search Console to understand the health of the website, data on positioning, impressions, clicks, CTR and the performance related to specific queries.


Also, through Google Search Console it is possible to check the indexing status of pages, and any exclusions. In this phase we analyze:

  • the robots.txt, a text file that contains information on pages that are or not accessible, to be sure that it’s written correctly and that the right URLs are included in the file;
  • the sitemap.xml, that contains information relating to pages, images, videos and other files on the website, verifying that it does not contain errors. The sitemap is used by search engines to “read” the website quickly.
  • the canonical tags, to verify that the canonical URLs refer to the right page to avoid duplication and cannibalization.

Information architecture analysis

We analyze how the contents are organized and which hierarchical importance the topics on the website have, evaluating their accessibility for search engines and users and how they are connected.

In particular, we should check:

  • The navigation depth, the number of clicks between the home page and other contents to which search engines assign importance: the fewer clicks needed for the passage, the greater the importance given.
  • The URL structure: a short and easily understandable URL increases the chances of clicks and facilitates the indexing process.

Status Code check

The Status code is the result of the server answers to the request made by a resource from the browser. During an SEO Audit, among many others, the following status codes may emerge for example:

  • 404 - page not found, an error to be corrected as soon as possible because when a user encounters a page not found, 99 times out of 100 he leaves the site, but not only: not finding the resource the spiders will not continue the scanning process.
  • 301 - the page has been permanently moved. In this case, you need to check that the redirects right set up.
  • 5xx - server error, due to various reasons such as errors in the implementation of the code or redirect rules. Of course, it is good to intervene as soon as possible.

HTML code analysis

The analysis of the HTML code is very important because it is the code analyzed by the search engine spiders. During this step the things to check are:

  • Absence of internal no-follow links, because otherwise, the search engines would not follow it.
  • Use of breadcrumbs, the “traces” that indicate the position of the page within the AI. These “breadcrumbs” are important to help the users to orient themselves in navigation and facilitate the search engines crawling processes.
  • Title Tag and Meta Description, the first is a ranking factor, the second is not, but it appears in SERP, affecting the CTR.
  • Contents: the texts must be optimized, respecting the right structure, the heading tags, and containing all the information necessary to satisfy the users’ requests.
  • Images: images must also be optimized with filename and alt tag.

Website loading speed

A website that slowly loads is a website easily abandoned by users. The website speed is not only important as a UX factor but it is also one of the main ranking factors. To check the website loading time you can use different tools such as Google PageSpeed Insight or GTMetrix and they all offer useful data and suggestions to solve problems.

Check structured data

To describe the contents to search engines by adding information and details but in a structured way, we can add to the pages a code that helps to understand what we are talking about. Structured data, which must be as suitable as possible for searches, are very useful in terms of positioning. Adding them to news pages, blogs and articles can improve the ranking of the website in Google results. To implement them we use

The structured data to check are many and specific to each function: publication of an article, a book, a product, or events, recipes and more. Among the main ones there are:

  • Organization: markup that gives information on the ownership of the website;
  • Breadcrumb list: markup that identifies a specific page within the AI;
  • Article: markup that gives information on articles and content such as the date of publication and the author;
  • Product: markup that provides information on product pages such as price, reviews, availability, etc;
  • Event: markup that provides information on a specific event, such as date, location, duration, etc.

Given the increasingly widespread use of voice assistants, it is also good, when possible, to add the speakable property. This is the one that identifies the most suitable parts within a web page for audio playback via speech synthesis (TTS). Adding speakable structured data means giving the Google assistant the ability to immediately identify the content to be reported and distribute it to the audience.
